PAUW BUBBLEGUM

The new Hide / Bubblegum split EP between Mystery Jets and Pauw has almost a Freaky Friday theme to it, as the four track release sees both bands doing original singles then swapping for covers of eachother's work. There is an element of mystery in how the two bands - one an indie heavyweight and the other a far-out Dutch psyche act - came to the collaborative project but what we do know is it's thrown up some interesting new leases of life. Our favourite is the shimmering Pauw cover of Mystery Jets' 'Bubblegum' as they've milled it through their machine of flickering guitars and complex retro vibes. Swirls of synths, slightly distorted bass licks and breathless harmonies make for kaleidoscopic listening as the hijacked melodies lend themselves to maximum bliss. Tame Impala better watch out, because if this track is anything to go by, Pauw are hot on their psychedelic tails. - SJ
